The spread of the COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2) and its profound consequences have completely disrupted people’s lives all around the world. The development of effective treatments and preventative measures is still in a very early stage. Changing the behaviour of the population and healthcare professionals is crucial to keep the virus under control. The Dutch government has taken far-reaching measures in a short time with the aim of drastically changing people’s behaviour. In this article, we discuss which scientific behavioural insights can be applied in communicating with the public to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to deal with necessary policy measures. We also show how these insights can be implemented in daily practice.
