Diagnostische tests kan men grofweg indelen in screeningstests (bijvoorbeeld BSE bij ontstekingen), exclusietests (D-dimeer bij veneuze trombose) en confirmatietests (Hb-typering bij hemoglobinopathie). Voor chronisch overmatig alcoholgebruik bestaan wel screeningstests, maar geen exclusie- of confirmatietests.
