Infertility is regarded as a life crisis that may result in arrest of development of adult life plans, regression when old unresolved conflicts are uncovered or, optionally, personal growth that is independent of successful resolution of this problem. Past psychological reports have described the infertile woman as possessing certain unstable static characteristics (e.g. strong feminine sex role) which are hypothesised to render these individuals ineffective in stress management arising from their infertility crisis and its treatment.
