Antifungal susceptibility tests have proved difficult to standardise, particularly those involving azole antifungal agents. The result has been significant inter- and intralaboratory variability in antifungal drug susceptibility data and a consequent loss of faith in their value for the prediction of clinical response. It has even been suggested that routine susceptibility testing with azoles is unnecessary and should be carried out only where clinical resistance is suspected.
