Diagnosis of excessive alcohol use: Bayesian formulae or clinical reasoning?

We comment on a review about new biomarkers of alcohol abuse. Diagnostic tests with moderate predictive value in the general population may still be useful in specific populations with a relatively high prevalence of alcohol abuse. In clinical practice, the patiënt’s history and symptoms are included in the diagnostic process. We conclude that biomarkers like mean corpuscular volume and liver enzymes have diagnostic value in the detection of alcohol abuse in various clinical conditions.
