The generalist physician in modern specialist medicine: race on the verge of extinction or indispensable?

In recent years an increasing number of sub-specialisms have arisen in specialist medicine. These sub-specialisms not only lead to desirable expertise in specific fields, but also especially to specialists who no longer recognize the rest of their field as part of their area. From the patient’s point of view, there still seems to be a need for broadly oriented specialists, who can review more than one problem at a time, and instead of treating diseases of organs or parts of organs, treat the sick person as a whole.
