The increasing use of CT brings with it concerns about the ionizing radiation exposure involved and the associated risks, especially the risk of cancer.
-
As a precaution, it is presumed that even low doses entail risks, in proportion to the dose.
-
Developments in CT technology such as automatic exposure control and tailored scan protocols make it possible to reduce the radiation dose, sometimes considerably.
-
It is important to be critical about the indication for the test. The diagnostic advantage should outweigh the possible long-term risks.
-
Children are at greater risk; in their case there should be a strong indication for CT and the dose should be low.
